One of the first signings by Minneapolis City, center midfielder Samuel Ruiz Plaza, or “Sammy with the good hair”, joins the Crows after a standout freshman season at D3 powerhouse Messiah College where he started 18 of 20 games full of highlights LIKE THESE.
Ruiz Plaza’s soccer career was kick-started in 8th grade with a year spent in Spain playing with the Ancora Aranjuez academy.
“We were in the second division, right under the top academy teams. that is really where I started to develop as a player.”
He returned to Minnesota and began to stack up a number of trophies and accolades.
At East Ridge High School he was a four-year varsity player, captain, all-state his junior and senior year and all-region his senior year. He racked up successes at club level as well, with two state championships with the St Croix Academy.
“I can’t wait to see him in this team, surrounded by these players” said Dan Hoedeman, the club’s Managing Director. “He has great vision and they can exploit it. Also, the guys have been drawing up haircuts they think they can talk “Sammy with the good hair” into and it could get legendary this summer.”
“Samuel was one of our top targets. He brings a little bit of flair to the team, a little bit of youthful exuberance” continued Hoedeman.
Ruiz Plaza can fit well in the midfield in a number of formations, and should dovetail with other midfielders on the roster like AJ Albers and Sam Forsgren.
“I wanted to be able to play soccer at a high level and MCSC gives me the opportunity to do so. I’m really excited about the team and gaining experience at a high level” said Ruiz Plaza.
He said “no comment” when pressed on his opening day hairstyle and referred all inquiries to “someone, anyone else.”
