WHO IS MINNEAPOLIS CITY SC?
Minneapolis City, nicknamed the Crows, is a 501c3, all-volunteer non-profit that fields teams in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL).
The club is an offshoot of the club Stegman’s, which has teams in the MASL and the MRSL, and was founded by childhood friends Jon Bisswurm and Dan Hoedeman and accelerated by a merger with storied MASL side FC Internationals. Now, Minneapolis City is a group of men and women who are united by their love for the game and desire to make a difference in their community.
WHERE DOES MPLS CITY PLAY?
Minneapolis City plays home games at Edor Nelson Stadium on the campus of Augsburg University. It is a wonderfully atmospheric 1,500-seat stadium in the heart of Cedar-Riverside with easy, free parking (it’s right off I-94), proximity to the light rail and bus lines, and even accessible for bikes.
WHAT IS THE NPSL?
The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) is one of the largest established men’s soccer leagues in the United States with over 90 teams competing across the country. Widely considered to be the fourth tier of the U.S. Soccer pyramid along with USL League 2, the NPSL is a highly competitive national league made up of regional conferences that feed to a national playoff, not unlike college sports. Minneapolis City competes in the North Conference, which includes teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Dakotas.
WHAT is the club’s nickname?
The club has no official nickname. However, fans began to call the club “the Crows” back in 2016 because of the gigantic murder of Crows that swarmed around our home stadium and the main supporters bar. The Minneapolis Mega Murder–it’s a real thing, they even have a Facebook page–frequent downtown, Midtown, and South Minneapolis and inspired perhaps the club’s most famous song.
WHAT’S UP WITH GRUMPY CAT?
The club launched it’s original logo and it was…one of those things you either loved or hated. Expecting this, the launch graphic–a classic that you can see by clicking here–featured Grumpy Cat’s take on the logo. And from then on, he was part of City lore. Fans made a “the Grumpy Roger” flag, sing songs about the cat, and the club even observed a moment of silence for Tardar Sauce before the first home game played after his death.
IS THE CLUB PROFESSIONAL?
The club is professionally amateur. In other words, we aren’t professional. We are an NCAA-compliant, high-performance club that acts as a platform for players to get to the next level. Think about us like a top college program; that’s our level of play, and we play a similar role in player development. Our alumni have gone on to play in Major League Soccer and professional leagues in Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Malaysia.
WHO CAN PLAY FOR MPLS CITY?
Because we are a community soccer club, our team is 100% players from Minnesota.
Because Minnesota is an open and welcoming community, all that means is that you are here because you want to be. We don’t recruit or house out-of-state players. But if you’re here for college or an internship you’re as much a Minnesotan in our eyes as the guys who were born or went to high school here (not least because most people who move here stay here, so basically this state is addictive–in a good way).
